hey everybody so uh welcome to teaching climate literacy using the new climate literacy education schooly course and I am your presenter Barry Curtis bikin friendly itta Curtis yeah somebody noticed that in print so um I guess that's I thought I would admit to that in any case let me drop the uh attendance link 1 more time to sign in make sure everybody's uh gets the credit they're looking for remember you always have a choice of uh salaries uh step advancement hours so you can move up the pay scale or straight out cash uh with the caveat being you can't be assigned any hours uh that you claim uh for those 2 things so um today we're going to I just make sure 1 thing that I stopped did I start recording or not okay sorry about that um we're going to talk uh sort of a a good run-up to Earth Day Earth Day is coming up uh April 22nd uh so you have a little bit of time to uh think about that in advance um and uh I feel like it's a good a time as any uh to introduce a little bit more officially the uh schooly course that the uh days climate uh Champions have been building for the last uh couple of years and we actually have another uh Champion visiting us Ria Petland from uh from Evans and um so she's also been hard at work on building that yes hi she's waving up to the camera uh because she has also uh Been instrumental in uh building the the lessons so uh without further Ado let me uh show you the course and make you members of it so you can start to explore it so this is the course the the official name is D climate literacy education days all schools climate literacy course and um what I'll do is just looking at who's here I'm going to click over on the members tab and uh let me know if uh you see your name already and if not we'll make you a member I see dangerous is already a member okay and notice you you're you're you're being made members as admins uh Claire let's see is Claire a member yes Claire you're also a member very nice um that's Miss elu let's see Tony Serrano or also known as ismile Serrano let's see if you're in here maybe not okay let me add you Andria of course is already a member uh Sam are you in here already let's see Sam I do this but it will darn it I keep doing that uh it will make your the workshop a little bit more meaningful if your members okay let's see and I think divine I don't see Divine let's add divine okay now I'm going to go back and turn you all into admins so let's see Pony make admin yes with Sam make admin yes Spencer make admin and the reason of course that I'm making you admins is so that you can uh copy material from this course into any of your own own uh courses we don't want you to add students uh to this course uh it's only meant to be a repository of lessons uh activities oops what did I do yeah okay Divine is an admin uh let's see is that it I think everybody's so double check now to make sure that um you see this course with this uh icon climate Champions LAUSD and it's called days climate literacy education and actually I can put the uh URL into the chat oops that's what all only went to 1 person do that again so if you click on the the link in the chat um it should take you right to the course I got everybody yeah it looks so okay right okay so uh again here's the course uh and the reason we specify that it's the days climate literacy education course is because there's already a climate literacy see education course as well as a group 4K 12 um and some of you may be aware that we really don't have um you know any access uh to the K12 schooly unless you're also simultaneously a teacher in uh a K12 school uh in addition to being a d uh teacher in in that case those teachers do have access to both but most of us don't so again uh Tuesday April 22nd is Earth Day and it's time to you know you can start to introduce some lessons and the whole purpose of this course uh is to provide lessons for uh adult education uh teachers uh to copy into their own schooly courses uh to use with their their students and of course you know just like any of the school courses we do have some updates and in fact there's an update uh that Ria herself posted uh talking about uh workshop on uh March a Saturday March 8th about water industry careers okay so let's take a quick look at the materials now that you're all members and you can follow along uh on your own device if you'd like so we have not a huge number of uh folders but uh there's some ones that I think you'll find you know very useful and uh as I mentioned um in my emails we're really trying to uh make this course useful for teachers in all programs but since this is completely uh volunteer uh you know sort of on our on our part and there's just a small group of us working on some areas are more developed than others um you know this is really just for your own information uh but we do have uh climate Champions uh we're still missing a couple of sites uh so if you know anybody at any of those sites uh who may be interested in becoming a climate Champion uh all I suggest to them that they talk to their uh principles okay so let's go back a step okay so we have a uh some folders government produced documents uh you know the with things official documents put out by uh different people uh you may or may find them useful but um these last 2 actually detail uh the the utility contract Deli used the school board resolutions that established the whole program of having climate uh literacy champions so just basically they're just PDFs but some of your more advanced students or or just for yourself may find some some good materials there okay so uh in the next folder uh lessons and materials appropriate for all programs let's just take a quick look uh Cheryl we're looking at uh the days climate Champions uh course uh you happen to know uh if you're a member already if not I'll make you a member right now I think I'm not a member yet okay let's go take good backpack a little bit and look for Cheryl thank you okay now you remember and we'll we'll also make you an admin uh for the reason that we don't want uh any students to be uh become members of of this course we want teachers to be able to copy materials from this course into their own courses and uh the only way you can uh do that is if you're an admin okay thank you also Cheryl I'm going to drop the um the attendance link into the chat okay okay so let's go back and again um this course as we go through the folders uh you may get a sense that uh it's a little bit chaotic and there's like a wide variety of things and that would be true because there's several of us uh creating the course and nobody is really uh you know like an overall editor or uh decision makers uh about the style or what's in the course so it it may strike you as a hodgepodge so uh lessons and materials appropriate for all programs and notice that um these are the the main folders academic courses lessons and materials especially appropriate for CT e and lessons and materials especially appropriate for for ESL and there may be some movement you know you may be an ESL teacher and find something that you really like in the academic courses or you know another way around so you know basic definitions you have different uh you know some are some are documents okay just a page it gives a short definition uh you know of the climate and weather uh hopefully it you know language appropriate for your uh class and then uh like a discussion so again the idea is not you're you're not supposed to be you know answering here you're supposed to be uh copying this to your own course and making use of it with your students but the idea uh for many of these uh folders is to uh give you like a complete lesson with several days you know worth of activities um that you could use so again uh a wide variety of different types of things curated by different climate Champions so again just this wonderful folder you know you so many different uh articles that you may find useful uh but then uh in your case uh you know you have to select for appropriateness of of language and how much you know you might have to adjust selected videos uh and in this case you see you know sort of curated so that you can read about what the different videos are so a lot of lot of different uh materials and links uh in this folder okay uh checking out uh lessons of materials especially appropriate for academic IC courses okay so again different links different videos some have more explanation than others but I did want to show you uh 1 of the types of things that I was doing so for example this 1 here the future as seen from Greenland this is a folder I created and the idea is that this would be like a whole maybe a week's worth of lessons uh for for some somebody or or even longer but you know a variety of the types of activities that 1 might find uh in a schooly course so the first 1 is obviously the link to the uh direct article and so you can see it's it's quite um let me make a little bit larger you know it's a it's an article it wasn't you know it's not intended for ESL Learners or high school students it's just a very General article you know quite long okay and from a website the global Oneness project but um but then uh what I tried to do is build uh you know more comprehensive lesson so you see the article you're also given just a plain text okay uh but notice What I've Done uh this plain text is uh I ran it through a reading uh readability uh website which sort of gives it a score uh in terms of their these different measurements that you know academics and experts use to uh measure uh how difficult something is to read for different populations so this article basically they're saying this uh the average reading level consensus for all of these different measures is about ninth grade so ninth grade is actually pretty appropriate for um academic uh an academic class but um I also uh using uh some AI tools and that's a whole another Workshop uh you know made a couple of different versions so that 1 is a slightly easier version it's it's quite long still so I also have a much shorter version a thousand words uh instead of 1600 words so you know some of your students may find that more appropriate uh as academic students uh I put in a glossary okay so the idea is that these really become like TurnKey uh activities so there's some comprehension sorry comprehension questions let's take a look at some of them see so again all from the the store okay uh open-ended questions again you know using the uh School the built-in schooly tools uh and then this is something that's really so amazing now listen to an AI create oops that's a spelling error let's fix that right now as long as you're here okay uh an AI created conversation about the article and uh at the end if you want more information about how I how this was created uh let's see if we can listen to it let me know if you uh are getting the sound this essay the future as seen from Greenland by Greg Childs really got me thinking oh yeah before I go any further can you hear the sound on the share yes no yes yes yes we can just listen to this about this star white world where all these researchers are trying to understand what is happening to the planet yeah so I figured we could dive into what child's discovered okay in Greenland and what it means for all of us so these research camps I mean they're not just tiny dots on a map right no definitely not they're really on the front lines of climate science giving us this Vital Information about how the planet is changing and sometimes that changes literally crashing down around okay so anyway this is you can see it's 13 minutes of 2 people having a conversation about this article and every bit of this conversation is AI created it's really an amazing tool and you know for some students this may be a good way to get them interested in the in the reading the text because now they can listen to somebody talking about the text uh it's really quite an interesting little a little tool so they could listen to that and then also a discussion but again the point is you as the you know if you find this of you know of interest and you think it may be uh something uh that you or your students could benefit from all you have to do is copy the whole thing to your course okay so um and then and you can see here a few more uh you know links different videos as well uh and again some some ideas about what videos uh are about okay so that's academic Barry I I have a question yeah sure did um Trump eliminate the EPA oh does anyone know has that gone yet I I don't know off the top of my head but anyway to the uh Topic at hand okay uh CTE courses um and you can see there's a lot less here uh we do have 1 clym champion who uh is a CTE teacher and so he started to uh work on some materials but we're far behind so uh if any of you have a special interest in building up lessons and materials especially appropriate for CTE courses by all means talk to me uh and uh you know we can get that we can get that started or at least uh you know resume working on it uh the most materials are in the ESL courses because quite a few of the Champions or ESL teachers uh we we did try to separate it into beginning beginning high and intermediate level students and above let's take a quick look so again some very uh beginning vocabulary work you know hopefully appropriate for uh beginning level uh ESL students but again and we have some activities uh a match so you know obviously this you know this is the setup of the question but when you're a student you're dragging and dropping but again the idea is you know a range of activities uh so a teacher can just copy uh these into the courses uh and make use of them oh actually let's go back again uh watch a video about climate change for example so uh again the same type of idea you first you you know there's the video right there those you know you can watch the video about climate change together with your students why okay then you have the transcript okay is it changing our climate system and then for a very long time it usually takes hundreds or thousands to stop there then even simplified version of that which has a a much lower uh readability score and then answer questions about the video and then a couple of discussion questions okay so uh very similarly uh a little bit more difficult but the same type of idea again more vocabulary and hopefully it's a little bit more advanced but maybe not a little bit again some activities some discussions that you know you can make use of uh and actually there are uh you know several more videos here uh this is a rather interesting 1 have a conversation with a chatbot about climate change and global warming this might be something you might want to try right now to to see how it works uh you could use your phone if you can uh let me enlarge that a little bit if to see if that uh QR code works or else you can click on the link uh you know your students could click on the link but if you have your phone try that uh see if it will uh pick up the QR code let me I'm sort of trying to get myself and yeah it's working all you have to do is put in your name um I'll share the what it looks like on the website it's a a website called mi-soo and um basically it's a chatbot and uh you just respond to the question so the the very basic question let's explore how our planet is changing together uh and because it's like it's supposed to be a conversation so that's what do you know about climate change and uh this 1 is my answer the 1 with the m so I said I don't know very much but I'm worried and so then it's talking to me it's okay to be worried Barry climate change is when Earth's temperature gets warmer and and you can see the conversation but again you can see it becomes like a very personal conversation and and like most of the the chat Bots nowadays uh if you let me see oh I may have to um refresh it let's see if I can okay okay so now um remember you can always please use the easier English so again if you're working with lower level uh beginning level even intermediate level uh ESL students you can always tell these AI uh chat Bots to use e easier English see so uh we can also recycle cans let's say uh what what does recycle okay so there you go so okay so there's the question do you recycle at home and I'll say yes I do so again it just keeps going on and on asking questions having interaction with the student until the student decides to end the session so let's see we'll say this was engaging and submit um engaging really like this so anyway that's called Mizzou a rather interesting um AI tool but um your students you know may find it very interesting or or challenging I would think so that's called uh have a conversation with a chat bot uh but again we've got you know each 1 of these folders with videos has activities related to the video uh and so um let's go back oh actually I should I wanted to share that 1 so uh volunteer activities in the Los Angeles area among these up this 1 water conservation uh also lots and lots of materials I think that Rio uh built most of these so thank you Ria for this section but you know with birthday coming up um this may be a a page that you may want to share with your student these are all local to Los Angeles ways uh to do something about uh climate change so equipment beautiful this is a very local uh organization that students can volunteer to you know participate in actual doing activities a little bit more traveling but there's Friends of the LA River etc etc uh and then you know there are a few other things uh the nvocc winner Academy from a 2 years ago uh have to load up some materials from this uh last this most recent winter Academy and some various other things uh that are here so let me stop the share for a moment and just get a uh you know some comments what do you think about uh what you've seen so far I think it's pretty impressive and a totally unbiased uh unbiased opinion here no really I do um and you gave me an idea for my my the water conservation thing I did last year I'm just going to expand it a little bit and put it in schooly more of it in schooly and I don't know how oh there we go and how about how about those of you who are not already climate champions uh Mr mongal uh taught during both uh winter Academy so he he has some experience in you know working with students in climate literacy but uh how about the of you uh do you think there's something here that um you can find useful with your students use it my reading class and my writing class I think it's great um lessons and I don't know what my students do I don't know and I don't know how interested they are or not and just exposing them to some of the readings and um volunteer possibilities but just I'm just looking at a reading about climate literacy what is it and why it's important I mean I'll do this tomorrow in class yeah good good good so in any case that's sort of the tour uh what I'd like you to do now though is uh maybe you can work with a partner uh either somebody you know maybe uh somebody in the room or somebody online to do a a deeper dive uh into any of those folders uh we can do this as a you know a whole group uh instead of having like a breakout rooms but I was thinking of giving you about 30 minutes um just to really explore uh the different fold ERS uh and maybe uh you know Cobble together uh which lessons that you might uh you know experiment with first uh in terms of using this uh actually with with students so um you can uh either uh pick a a partner or I can sort of group you uh into breakout rooms um and you can work on this uh with a partner does that strike your fancy at all any yes Miss elu yeah I have a question I think uh the I'm already looking at the MSU very interesting nice thank you for sharing that um wondering what about the AI did you talk about how you generated the the conversation um I'd be happy to uh but let's instead of uh working on the how-to yet let's do this uh other little thing that I um suggested where you find the activities uh that you may want to use out of this course and and the truth is since you're already admin uh you can already uh you know copy any section to your uh any 1 of your own schooly courses but certainly uh if we have time at uh you know the last part of the workshop I can sort of give you a quick inservice on how to make that conversation because it's really pretty wild oh okay I just wanted to make sure I didn't miss that information yeah these are all these new AI tools if you uh you know come to the division of workshops or come to my workshops uh we will we will cover them uh but for right now uh like let's say it's uh 5 oclock let's go into um let's see 5 525 give you 25 25 minutes to explore uh all of the different folders and the different categories of activities and you know come up with at least 2 things uh that you could perhaps work with uh your students so uh I'm going to 525 maybe we can come back together and perhaps share 1 or 2 activities or the folder that um you thought you may be able to make use of right away get 1 person to share 1 activity that or 1 folder that you think you could use with your classes fairly quickly all right I'll go Barry it's birthday is coming up so it's a good time you have like a month and a half right Barry so I was thinking I could use some of this information um to create some posters or have the students create some posters uh in my graphic design bankless and anything from like different topics such as an emissions or deforestation or you know things like that just to make others aware so what I was going to say is if you do have students create some posters maybe we can get them posted up on the website as as samples yeah that would be great I think I could introduce that project here soon and then um not only that you know that um we we can broadcast you know student work uh to every schoology student you know the updates so for example right now in the update it says something about the job and career fair coming up so we could you know if you have a a winning poster for example we could we could share that okay yeah I can turn that into a little competition in the class okay so um not hearing uh any uh more volunteers oh I didn't know I'll I'll volunteer oh good I went into the folder on the academic um you want to share you want to share what screen item um sure so let me see okay so I first went into um the folder of the academic um folder and this was an interesting article by definitely thought it was going to be too difficult for my ab student right so um I looked at what else is in the folder whoops let me get back to here well why am I not where's the rest sorry I'm not doing this okay um trying to get back to the main folder well I'm just going to go back into school and see hold on okay courses are you guys can see my whole courses very nice icons love uh thanks here we go and so I went into this um academic courses lessons here so I was really happy to see that this was too difficult and then I saw that oh if you go down down here there's a grade 6 to 8 uh no let me see there's an essay or easy easier version of the essay right there so this is an easier version of that so I thought that was great and then there's a shorter version of it 2 which is great and um it's the first folder of the future and then what I really like that you have this conversation look at this you have an AI created conversation about the article and so you could play this this essay the future as seen from Greenland by Craig Childs really got me thinking about this stark white world so I thought it was like that would be a really great um modeling of how students can have a a convers academic conversation because they don't have the really um knowledge of the back and forth and how you could explain things so I thought that would be a really good modeling of that and then they could write about what they think about the conversation between people okay nice very nice and and that actually if nobody else wants to share that actually might be a good segue into how to make Miss elu was also uh very interested in in um how I made that yeah I would love to see that too so um if if that's the case okay so let me just uh stop share spend a little moment explaining what that is I mean it's really really amazing technology that I mean it's 1 thing to um you know create like a script but it's another thing that this device this tool makes the voices you know and it's very conversational and uh pretty wild so um let me let me sort of show you what what that is let me get to the website so let's see loading slowly let me okay so let me share okay so what this is this is a Google site it's called notebook LM notebook LM and it's an AI tool and let me see for example create new because this may be something that you do so um you know you can basically it's a Google website so your ssos are Google accounts you can sign in with your SSO uh and this is sort of the work area and basically uh uh over here on the right where it says deep dive conversation that's the tool but before you can generate something you have to add a source and you can do this from a text like a any text or you can do it from a YouTube video so for example if I said upload a source or add a source you you get this little menu so maybe there's something in your Google Drive you have a Google doc you have a presentation Google Slides uh there's a website somewhere there's a YouTube video see so basically uh let's let's uh pick a files and we'll do a text thing first and uh let's find some something that we can do um let's see what would I have a nice uh 100 clime Champion for example uh lessons for the schooly course see these are the ones that I already did okay there's no document in that 1 um let me find let's find something different let's see where would I have some no it doesn't I didn't plan to do this so I don't have any I didn't have anything specific well I see new zela remember new zela let's see if there's any uh no that's just how to log in I thought maybe we had some articles um yeah heck let's go to YouTube why not we have to find a YouTube url so let's go to YouTube okay okay the State of the Union oh that's I don't think we want to do a live let's see okay English pronunciation let's look at that it's 2025 and you're still using Okay so so I think we got to grab the URL so there's the URL so I copied the URL okay I'm going to paste it into here and we'll say insert so boom right away it gives you a little description of mastering English pronunciation the letter s okay and now we're going to do this deep dive conversation all you got to do is just click generate and it it it does take a little bit of time you know is generated it also does this these other tools study guide a briefing you know all these other little things that uh allow you to um you know get more learning material well that's well that's working so like these are some ones that I did before so so like there's the Greenland ice global warming uh introduction to notebook LM I I did a video about that um but see so for example global warming causes in Solutions so again that was the from a YouTube video this is how we're doing but so this here this is an example of the brief for the notes C so in addition to creating that podcast it gives you all of this information information about that article the main themes key ideas you know all of this stuff quotes Okay that's that 1 and then the uh well that's the same 1 uh the the study guide again it it gives you some questions it gives you answer keys those questions essay questions and the glossy so if any of this looks familiar it's because this is how I made some of those materials in the schooly course you have a it's still working oh there we go so it it's 11 minutes long let's see what it it made all right so today we're gonna really dig into something that might seem pretty basic on the surface okay the letter s but trust me there's a lot more to it than meets the eye and we're going deep today because a lot of you out there are really trying to you know get that perfect English pronunciation and you're looking for every Edge you can get absolutely so we found this YouTube video It's called English pronunciation the letter s 5 ways to pronounce s in English Okay it's by easy English with James yeah and get this yeah there are 5 ways to pronounce the letter s that's a lot more than most people think I know right fine I mean who knew it's true so by the end of this deep dive I mean like who knew right 5 ways to pronounce the letter so what do you think about that do you think miss elu this is the tool that you asked about do you think you may yeah that's cool I like it thank you now how hard how how much work was that for me to create this amazing conversation that your students can listen to yeah looks very easy so I would say easy it's easy all I did was click click click and then boom it's done and what what beautiful voice is okay anyway Cheryl uh make sure you um fill up the evaluation I did I did that already thank you so much Barry this is great okay well in any case look it's um have a good night 8:45 almost time to uh end
