people like okay so I put the link uh to the sign-in sheet in the chat and we'll go ahead and get started again uh the topic today is Magic School a Ai and AI app especially for teachers it really uh does have a lot of potential uh for changing the way we craft and design lessons uh quote to quote a famous um educator that I know uh AI uh is supposed to um improve our teaching not replace it is that was that right did I get that right correctly enhance enhance oh okay AI can enhance our teaching and it's not supposed to replace it so in any case uh yeah I think that's really a great um great way to look at it um we're going to start out with uh Mr mongal he's going to uh give you an introduction to uh Magi School AI uh and then um I will show you how I've actually used it uh to create uh activities within uh a schooly course that I uh am developing along with uh the other uh days Champion uh climate Champions and then we're going to really give you a a extensive period to try to um practice and maybe create some activities uh of your own uh so again I'm going to uh stop the share and let Mr Mangal take over yep and I'll drop the the link again into the chat for the signing make everyone and welcome to today's PD um so they Barry and I we will uh introduce them talk about uh Magic School uh magic school is an AI app that uh that should help teach teachers with their teaching um and helping save time if you like got it how I got introduced to this app was just over the summer I was given uh a pronunciation class at a4c uh at the last minute and I've never taught this class I need to know how to put put together a class and what I did I found this cool uh School AI app in the learning a couple hours it uh planned out many uh many interesting lessons for me so anyways um let's get started um all right um so first stop is called Magic spool all right so that's all you pretty much have to do is just type in magic School right once you do type in magic school for the Magic School AI by the way all right and once you click on that it's going to give you 2 options right the students and educator right students and educated wait a second make sure everybody's cut up no I mean want to take notes okay yeah okay um so go and click on that okay um so all you gotta do is just click on sign in sign in with Google this is the this is the easiest way all right so once you do that um usually it has you verify your your LAUSD email and once you type in your Laos the email you're you're it all right so again log in log in with your with the login with Google um I was already logged in I let me see if I could log out let me see I can show you guys let me log out let me do it 1 more time okay yeah signing with Google okay so recognizes me so yeah so so I'll try to do this yeah so all you got to do is type in your Laius the email and you're ready okay okay no no no password no password all right so right off the bat you can see magic school they offer so many resources right um let's take a look here real like this yeah it's a lot it's a lot a lot where I can really distract you rather than help you so I kind of uh filter it out just to a few um things that I was using that I was thinking maybe we can help you guys out um so the first 1 um I know some of us were being evaluated right and that we got to come up with the lesson plan so right on top if you scroll down just a little bit you can see lesson plan right so go ahead click on listen plan now remember this is this is created mainly for K to 12 but you can you can filter this out alright so let's say I'm working with level 2 ESL I could just put second grade all right I could put a topic I can put let's say let's say using I could do like this level 2 if so using BS airports just pops out lesson plan for you right and again um you can be a specific on what you want right grammar uh theme vocabulary I put I put ESO level 2 airport right so here you go gives you an objective it gives you a lot you can play with this right um gives you key points a lot of vocabulary here opening introduction independent practice closing extension homework Etc okay so again depending what uh what what you are working on what your class is working on you can uh you can filter it out that way okay so that's 1 thing all right and I'll show you guys later how to how to copy and paste this and uh email it to yourself where you can have it um convenient to you because let me go back here magic school okay so that that's less than the plan all right let me uh let me go to another 1 okay let me go to here if I wanted to create a quiz or a test right for for for our students right if I want to do it fast and I want to do it quick all right so again let's say second grade right number of questions I'm going to say 10 again I'm going to put ESL level 2 um grammar did topic Airport okay generate voila yep so is there a way to let's say the lesson you can connect the lesson plan the test to the lesson plan have you tried that no I haven't um okay so what what do I ask magic school to do um I wanted uh 10 question quiz in regards to the airport and I wanted to use the grammar did all right um number 1 let's take a look okay what did Sally do at the airport yesterday right ABCD Tom check his bags that's a very good question um number 3 that the plane arrive on time blah blah okay so everything is there for you okay um then you have the answer key right over here awesome yeah easy convenient fast okay so the best way to transport this let me let me do this now okay if you want if you wanted to edit right if you wanted to add things take things out you can do it you can just click on edit on the bottom you can add remove whatever you like to do let me take yeah so let me yeah so how do we do it okay so all you got to do is you just got to copy it copy it all right open up a Word documents and paste it and email it to yourself that's it easy as that okay easy as that easier for you that's I can worry about maybe the 12th grade 12th grade higher grade you let me do let me do a quick questions using when because it's the agent thing you see when I got home at lunch but when I got home the mail had already arrived so when is a great so past perfect plus restaurants that's perfect using 1 about restaurants all right let's generate that will be interesting yes best part okay it's right here right right now chat box okay oh yeah when you go to rain a chat box all right this is basically look this is all the things that I've wow I've created okay this is this is basically you can just put in exactly what you want and it's going to generate how is when you check like different from what we just did um there that's more it's more defined it's more uh it's more focused this is very open this is you can ask anything you want here which 1 Rhea yeah yeah yeah basically asking whatever he wants it's like Google owns all right so um I don't know let's do it again let's uh let's do sure present perfect work yeah okay how long have you worked okay present perfect questions about work about 4 experience you want sensor 4 let's see what it gives okay okay using and 4 okay okay so here are some present perfect questions about work using sense and since you guys and how do we filter the level because this is you know what it doesn't you could you can can even generate this and you can uh put on speakers and let the class listen to it okay what do you have on more is there like the update under the toolbox this is how you do it okay yeah more yeah just say um you know there's something else to say and do you somehow organize these yourself do you have a system can you you just you just I just yeah I just kind of just kind of go as what's needed so as you can see look I put climate change vocabulary that was for the winter plus okay and it just saves it for you there exactly um my students were having trouble what the word simultaneously so I just went in there I said give me this is my level 3B class I'm like can you generate 10 sentences and questions in regards to the word simultaneous good and boom this is what it gave me so save you time this was I mean level 3 you know level 3 they might leave it's difficult for them sometimes that what that present perfect I look at these questions have you ever visited a foreign country how many books have you read this have you finished your homework together Etc it's a good mix it's a good mix and if you want to filter it out to exactly what you want you can just say have you using the grammar and and you could you can filter it out to just want a specific theme right like how I do with airports right I just said grammar did airport 10 questions except to the teacher it's up to the teachers energy and technique to really get the most out of these questions to help them to scaffold it um yeah yeah um in my re in regards to that that that that uh conversation class that I had over over the summer so these are some examples that I uh conversation idioms and pronunciation okay so yes I'm sorry interrupted you know that's okay that's okay next question I'm not can we do something other than here so I just wanted to know if it does something about primary colors what are the primary colors primary this is for like Mr yeah color theory and graphic design out of curiosity sure primary colors graphic design oh wow this we have we have no idea but this is great yeah I'm just curious RGB red green and blue yeah CMYK or print colors yeah yeah so this is good luck so it's not ESL other you know other topics other context the topic we want to try something with accounting yeah accounting QuickBooks maybe give it a question a specific I can use this I guess they're doing school interview with work yeah well I'll help you uh I'll help you navigate through that but you have a specific topic I could type in let's see what it generates okay what what is a debit what is a debit debit card debit in accounting what is the dividend Counting debit in accounting debit and accounting okay here we go and it's generating is that correct it's still trying to generate okay debit is an entry on the left side of The Ledger account that represents the addition like an acid or that's good yeah yeah there's more to it than that but that's a good answer the only 1 question if you make it a little bit broader give you more definition probably uh W is 1 of the 2 fundamental aspects of financial transactions are there being a credit you are some key points to understand about that I was still generating Mr Takaki so it's still generating it gave us 1 definition but it's still it's still roaming so em pop out okay um okay so on the right side as you can see everything that you that you go through that you that you want to generate its stores and everything you're not interested in you can always just trash it okay that is you can just trash it just tells you that that is and what it does yeah thank you make suggestion for you oh types of places that types of quizzes yeah sure let me go back here um so it's gonna be right over its gonna fall under its gonna fall under multiple choice oh okay yeah um let me do 1 more thing this 1's really good okay um worksheet General this is really good okay again ESL teachers um CD teachers you've been uh perhaps use this okay let me do again let me just when you do this so 1 present actions happening happening so this 1 right this is this is not a quiz this will help you this will generate a worksheet for you so here we go so ESL level 1 present continuous acting is happening now okay so here we go yep so there you go look it gives you a fill in the blank can you teach us what to spend so much time creating this is great about this you can always expand it oh absolutely absolutely right absolutely um so look put on the blank put on the blank with the words right um she is playing in the park right gives you a word Bank all right multiple choice questions what is she doing she's dance she's she danced she's dancing all right um open-ended questions right which is great for conversation what I what are you doing right now and uh again gives you the answer key toward you what is your address as you are copying this let's say that we want to copy obviously we don't want to right yeah sure just drop it and then uh you can just you can just paste it on a on a Word document middle the pages will generate yes exactly and you make could make the font bigger smaller you can add you can take out right over here Mr edit prompt oh okay great all right very clear very clear yeah yeah it's it's very clear absolutely she went to be the guy that asked the Creator created this um so look edit right some things you want to take out like for example I don't know like in the bottom it says teachers please review the example response is 1 of the questions to ensure the line with expectation so you can erase that if you like because you just don't need to see this know exactly they're giving you tips right and you save it again and we have everything boom that's no longer there okay just like how you took out you could you could add it right okay I'm gonna stop can you just go back for 1 second and um because I have it opened on my own desktop you click on launch to students how do you get to worksheet generator I can't find it sure I can do that oh Magic tools okay you go to magic tools okay I got it now okay yeah thank you oh I'll just uh chime in and say we're if you if you scroll on down Idris why don't you scroll on down there's something like 80 90 different tools and they're adding new ones all the time but if you find 1 that sort of in the middle of the list and you use again again click the star and what it does is it pops it up to the top and saves it for you where it's easy to find all the time right so then you could check out your history again I'll put history it tells you exactly what you've done all right if you need to look at it again mhm and don't just remember when uh when you when you do work at this right don't worry too much about I mean hold on let me go back here for example multiple choice don't worry too much about the about the grade but when it's asking you for a grade right don't worry too much about what you want to do everything you want put it right here right in the middle right where it says topic standard okay right this you can just yeah you can bypass it um because this right here will like for example if I put ESL level uh level 4 what's a grammar um past perfect is also passive voice passive voice let's go past perfect past perfect examples the okay so so do you see what I mean that grade level doesn't really mean much okay it doesn't really much don't let that deter you because in the beginning I'm like oh this doesn't this is not aligning with the with adult head but it doesn't need to write right in the middle where it says um what is it objective on all the information just put all your information right there okay yeah as clear as you can just tell exactly what you're looking for okay Sally and Tom Lantern Homer before they went to play this number 1 no answer what is past perfect it's not dead it's not down and being a student so Sally and Tom had done their homework before they went to play Perfect okay remote and and you can keep teaching I guess right um I think that that concludes my my uh portion my little portion of this uh thank you well thank you Mr mongal for that introduction um yeah and as I had alluded to there are so many tools like and every they always have these new ones coming out it's like I just saw 1 that said uh develop a PD PD developer which I hadn't seen before so I may using that uh myself in in in the future um I just want to remind everybody to make sure that you uh have signed have signed in uh I'll put that link in the sign in for them and again even if you're on the clock right now please sign in uh because uh it still gives an indication of interest in the workshops and in in the topic and that helps us to uh maintain this series uh moving moving forward okay so let me go ahead and uh share the screen again okay so um in this part of the I do that right let's see yeah okay so we're that the agenda again so Idris uh walked us through an introduction to uh Magic School Ai and uh what I'm going to do is uh show you how I actually have used this multiple times uh to create actual lessons for uh a schoology course uh so the schooly course uh that we're going to talk about oh not my sandbox uh but I will remind you that the agendas can be found in the inbox uh if you're want if you're uh getting uh dstr uh you don't necessarily need the sandbox but if you're an agenda but if you're getting if you're going to request salary step advancement you need to have the agenda uh and also of course you need to sign in uh we're going to go to What's called the uh D climate literacy education of course uh you should recall that I'm also uh nvocc days climate champion uh and the Adult School uh climate Champions have collaborated on building this course uh this course here on the left the LAUSD climate literacy Champion uh is of course uh meant for k12 and but of course as you know most of the things in K12 are not accessible uh to to US unless you're also a 12 teacher and you have access to both platforms so what we started to do was to make our own only for uh adult school so real briefly uh I'm going to just chat a little bit about the course uh there will be actually I I do have planned for uh a future uh works out uh a more in-depth look at it but um part of it what we're trying to do is create TurnKey lessons for teachers that they can copy from this course into any of their own courses so this course has been for teachers to use as a a resource um so as an example let's see lessons and materials especially appropriate for academic courses so this was an early 1 that I did the future is seen from Greenland and in this folder uh you get a link to the original article where it is online uh then the same thing uh as plain text document the comprehension questions for the essay open-ended questions that students can uh you can give to students uh this 1 is not with m School uh but it's another great website we can talk about at some other time uh listen to an AI generated conversation about the article uh I you know check that out that's it's pretty wild uh and then finally like discussion question so what I'm trying to do uh is create a lot of these materials much more efficiently uh by using the the tools in the AI so let's take a look at in particular lessons of materials especially appropriate for ESL courses okay uh so for example uh some for very beginning and then some for intermed immediate level and again the same type of thing uh discussion questions readings uh watch the video uh so let's for example let's take a look at some of these things watch a video about global warming and answer questions about it so there's the link to the actual video there's a transcript and then a summary of that video which is in much easier English of some vocabulary practice a bunch of definitions see then there's a let's see I guess I should look at the questions uh a bunch of questions and this is 1 of the things where the uh magical can help by creating the questions but unfortunately it doesn't communicate you know exactly with schooly uh so you do have to at the end of the day you just copy and paste those questions into the schooly uh format but you know you don't have to worry too much about what the questions are going to be all right and then you can see I even made a cahoot uh and a few other worksheets so what I'd like to do is sort of like walk you through uh the steps of what we might actually do and how I would do it so I happen to found I I found a video also about climate change it's not too long almost 6 minutes uh and the most convenient to get started with these is you look for if you're going to use a video as opposed to a text you look for 1 that actually has a transcript already provided there are ways to um if there is no transcript to generate 1 but it's a little bit more complex so the first thing would be try to find 1 that has a transcript and usually what you do is you sort of look down through the uh notes there see oh look at that transcript show transcript so what happens when you click on show transcript is at the upper right you get the transcript with all the timings now we really don't need the timings so uh my practice is I'd copy all of this just everything you know get get all of the stuff okay uh let's say I copy it and then uh what I did over here was um I pasted it into a Word document and I'm going to keep this word document so I have I I'm going to use it as a reference I have the uh title I have the URL for the video and then what you can see that I did is I I pasted all of the uh the different lines so you do have to take a little bit of time and get rid of the the time signatures and you know it's a pretty fast little process I just uh you know delete those times to make it more paragraph like keep adding the space there so it did take me a few minutes uh to do that for the the several pages oops okay so now I have uh pretty much the the transcript as a single document so now I can take this whole thing if I want to and copy this now as a as a nice text I'm going to copy that now I can go to magic school okay and um I put sort of the ones that I use all the time but for example this uh text summarizer is really helpful take any text and summarize it in whatever length you choose okay so again this is the form uh oh I'm sorry this looks like the wrong things these are questions just make sure we get the right tool okay there we go so let's say I wanted to be uh 3 paragraphs and now I paste the original text and I generate it and notice at this point I didn't do anything with the the level and this is the other website that I use all the time when I'm doing these things uh it's called readability scoring system and I'm glad that Cheryl uh is here today because she can has a reading teacher with a lot of experience she can comment on this okay so um I pace I go back to the Magic School we want to get this 1 we want to copy this and drop it into this readability scoring system okay and then it says calculate text readability okay so that little piece there is college level reading okay most likely there's going to be too difficult for an ESL teacher at any level uh only probably the the highest academic level but see that tells me what it is so what I do then is I go back to my Word document and I put in that little snippet there and then I I say what the this is college level Okay so that's still way too high so now I go back to Magic School okay so instead of the text summarizer see I'm I I'll go to the um text leveler and you don't have to actually you know you're not restricted to using a magical for this most the uh AIS like chat GPT will do the same thing okay so let's going to we're going to put that there okay so that's this and this time we're going to say okay I want it to be kindergarten I want to make it really really easy and again this sort of touches upon something you were asking about this the grade levels in Magic School are you know they're not really used to adult education uh and so they're uh frame of reference is different um but anyway let's take this now so I'm going to copy this I also go over to my word document again I dropped it into a Word document okay and then I go back to readability and I clear that out and now I'm going to paste the new 1 right so this is the new 1 Let's calculate the text readability oh look at that dropped it down to a fifth grade level much easier so I'm going to say fifth grade so what I do I do a lot of this type of thing going back and forth with the uh text and this readability Checker to really make sure that whatever text I'm dropping in to uh the course is really suitable um 1 thing I did want to add is in in a webinar that um I intended uh I learned about something called uh the sepher let me see if I can find it over here on my other screen uh sepher and clb instructions uh for chat Bots and things and uh what some people have noticed uh is that coming through fine on the the screen that um since uh like things like uh chat gbt and a few other you know major uh AI uh tools don't really know adult education um some sometimes they react well to what's called Sephora I think the central European framework uh for reference uh let's see for a reference for languages I think and um so they have these levels so 1 thing you can try and and when you're working with an Aisa you know use sepher level A2 use for level C1 uh clb is a Canadian language uh something or other but um you may want to investigate that and I can um I can share that uh image uh with you okay so anyway so let's say we we get uh the transcript or the paragraph that we want I've still got it copied right I can go back to Magic School okay and um go back to 1 of the other tools okay uh there's your quizzes again or text dependent questions all right so let's let's say um open ended the discussion questions see I'm this is I'm thinking for the discussions in schoology right so I'll put in my text there and uh you know let's add make a little bit more because then it gives me something to choose from uh if I don't like what they've uh come up with okay so what do you think happens to the weather when the earth gets warmer that would be great for pretty much all levels uh can you describe how it might feel why do you think it is important you know so you can see boom I've already got you know some texts for the video I've got a discussion questions I've got easier text uh you go on back oh you know and I would copy that too right so I don't have to go find it again it's all going to be on 1 document okay so let's just make some regular old multiple choice okay we'll put that same set of questions oh no that's the wrong 1 I have to go back now see that's why it's nice to drop these things into the word document first it's much easier to find so there you go just as um Idris showed you you know you you've got some questions and then of course you know like I mentioned you can't unfortunately you can't just copy and paste this uh into schooly you do have to um you know make still make the questions individually and of course always double check and make sure it makes sense and make sure the you know the they're accurate anyway that's what I've been doing uh for in this um days climate literacy education uh you can easily whip out you know many activities uh and it's all sort of uh it it it let's say it enhances my teaching by being able to provide these lessons uh very quickly so any questions about what I just showed you and uh Cheryl if you don't mind um are you familiar with this um readability scoring system or something like it you showed me last time we were on the p on the professional development about this but um I don't know it that well I kind of just wrote in the chat that I recommend um putting it 2 levels down from whatever people teach so trying starting their um so if you teach ESL 4 I would put in asking for a second grade level and I teach was equal to 7th 8th grade and with with basic language arts and reading and I usually put in like asking for a sixth grade level so that's kind of a what I found to be about right oh thanks yeah I couldn't see the chat while I was speaking okay thanks for that okay so this is where we are in the agenda uh time for you guys to really try to practice us we wanted to uh give you all an opportunity to try some of these um tools with something that you're already working on so maybe if you already have a lesson uh be it Aviation or be it auto mechanics or be it you know uh graphic design or iLab were uh whatever it is that you're teaching uh math see if you can um look through that list of tools and um create something new something that you may might be able to use as a worksheet or something that you might be able to uh drop into a uh schooly class schooly course so it's it's 505 uh which gives us um substantial time actually write like 505 to is let's see 25 and 15 uh yeah it's almost like a 50 minutes to work on it but what we'll do is we'll stop a little bit short of uh that time so we can do a little bit of Cher and tail show and tell uh and of course the Idris and I are both here uh to uh answer and respond to questions so what do you think are you ready to try a quick question yeah sure of course I'm just trying to write everybody before um people start to um take off to go to their night classes um let's have a little bit of sharing do we have any other Brave uh teachers who would like to share uh what they created or what they found out using School sure mine too oh I'm I'm overwhelmed by the flood of volunteers I lost I made recommendation and I don't find it I don't sorry I find it okay when you find it I don't know if you can hear us I can hear I would like to share go ahead by all means yeah this is the scenario okay do speak up a little bit because the the audio is a little bit low a scenario between a parent and a teenager regarding excessive social media to use uh instead of focusing on their studies so there's a setting given and the parent and the teenager begin to discuss this I think it's great because God can pull from this uh practical issue uh communication Styles um personal issues like anger and then I can go to Value to honest and from this um and then you know they would role play this and so there's also a little lesson plan that we you know generated finest okay let me go back stop sharing and find this 1 okay this 1 I'm going to share with you this 1 is 3 grade lesson that it was it's 1 way you know I've been approaching it slightly differently this is a um you know assessment regarding a worksheet types of problems opening introduction uh guided practice independent practice closing extension so they the problem between the teenagers and meshes together excellent and and you all and you created all this in the past 20 minutes or so even so it's a I mean it's a tremendous amount of work that might otherwise have taken you hours well thank you for sharing that excellent uh anybody else okay Mr larma sharing oh nice I like the rubrics Kira I see that you raise your hand but we'll I'll call on you next wow so do you think you'll be able to use this is something I can use right away to to grade the students and and the performance and the the hands on so so this is new you you did not have this before today no okay and do you know how to drop this into schooly in ology Gradebook and make use of it no no I have I have to copy the page somehow somewhere okay well I can help you with that on a different day yes you absolutely can take you create a of the uploaded for medical safety data sheets and unfortunately my camera is not letting me switch it to turn it around I was wondering background off what the vegetables had to do with the the safety sign but oh here we go so sorry broken on my phone so here's the MSDS symbols and assessment questions and It produced um an answer key for me as well okay okay but I have available um and it was based off of its full of sweat it was pulled off of this uh sick data sheet for chemical reactions for um like if you see like a truck going down the you may see this uh danger diamond on there or you may see this on things like you know cylinder tanks and such and the like anything that can potentially cause you harm so these are still very much used so are you saying uh Miss Hansen that the uh Magic School pulled that information from the image yes it pulled everything from the image ah very interesting very interesting yeah I don't know if see it okay no I we get the basic idea and what tool did you use to to grab the information from the image so I had come over to the magic tools and where academic content I hit this 1 I was able to make a quiz so um it just by messing with it initially I don't remember how to look at the history there we go okay well it's it's great to know that you don't need actually need text to create the quiz you can create text from images that is certainly going to be very helpful that's great actually I would think that uh those of you in the medical field would be able to take a really nice diagram from 1 of your textbooks for online and turn it into something um okay Cheryl Miller um would you like to share 1 or 2 of the things that uh you created and then we'll we'll finish up okay um I went and I did a few things for can you see this screen Ruby Bridges seventh grade okay you see that yep we see it okay so I just I teach reading and um we it's Black History Month um I just put in information about asking about Ruby Bridges seventh grade level and a reading so it just gave me some basic facts right here and it gave me some discussion questions and then it gave me it just said you want activities I'm like sure so then it gave me some activity can you um let me see are you seeing the new are you seeing the new screen no not yet okay um you see the page with discussion questions there and activities share okay and now it's showing me okay yes now we see that yeah so give some really good ideas for activity is a timeline creation a letter writing um reflection Journal so I like that very good that was quick and then um let me show you then I was like we're reading right now um it's a class you're reading about Jackie Robinson so we've been talking a lot about segregation so I just put in like segregation in the US still today and they gave me some ideas to talk to for students to look at thinking of our neighborhoods social media things like that so I did that and then I thought oh let me put in the topic today versus 1940s and you see that yep yep so I thought that would be interesting to discuss because we have been talking a lot about Jim Crow laws and things like that so I thought okay this would be good for um discussion so maybe I would then create some you know putting this in and put some activities in and um or create I haven't like looked at like maybe um you know multiple I don't really for writing and reading I don't really like multiple choice so I don't only do that but maybe um I was thinking game but game is not really appropriate for this for this topic um so I have to think about you know any suggestions about what I would um ask um them magic AI to do for like um activity to narrow it oh well um in your prompt say you know this is a you know this is a serious topic and uh can you suggest an activity that is not a game okay include that in your prompt and see what happens okay yeah okay okay well uh that brings us really to the end of uh today Workshop I
