Medical Assistant

Course description:  This competency-based course contains information and training to prepare persons to function as medical assistants through training in ethics, medical terminology, and the preparation of medical forms. In addition, students will gain expertise in the day-to-day functions of the following specialties: ambulatory care, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, out patient surgery, urology, orthopedics, internal medicine, cardiology, and laboratory.

PREREQUISITES:
Students must be 18 years of age to participate in the MA program.
Students must obtain a physical examination with a physician’s clearance that the student has no limitations to perform the duties of a medical assistant.
Students must provide physician verification and/or proof of titer for the following vaccinations: hepatitis; measles, mumps, varicella, Tdap, TB (two-step or clear chest X-ray), negative RPR; and the current year’s flu vaccine.

BACKGROUND SCREENING AND URINALYSIS:
At NVOC, it is required that the school will conduct a background check and urinalysis at the student's expense.

Students accepted to the Medical Assistant program will be denied clinical rotation without successful completion of a seven-year criminal background check and urinalysis screening. Failure of any portion of the program's required checks may prevent the student from completing the MA program, depending on the findings and based upon the current program's requirements.

NVOC requires background checks as a condition of acceptance for clinical rotation, and may do so because:
    • students have significant interaction with minors and vulnerable populations;
    • students may be eligible to take the NHA examination but there is no guarantee of certification;
    • students who cannot successfully complete a background check may not, in some instances, be eligible for licensure, certification, or employment upon graduation.

NVOC reserves the right to request another background check at any point in a student’s program.

RECOMMENDATION:
 A high school diploma or equivalency is required for MA certification by the National Healthcareer Association. While not required for the class, NVOC strongly recommends all persons in the MA program possess, or obtain, a high school diploma or high school graduate equivalency certificate prior to the start of the MA program.
